Growing for Success – A great Success! A short report by Jennifer Wilkinson, Editor, Australian Nutgrower
Nuts were definitely in favour at the ANIC Conference 2009. Over 130 delegates attended to hear presentations on nut topics ranging from the role of the International Nut Council presented by its Chair, Jack Mariani, to industry production and market data presented by almond and macadamia industry leaders and Chris Joyce, HMAC and an outline of the situation at Timbercorp almonds by John Bird, Select Harvests.
Speakers from the nut manufacturing sector endorsed the popularity of nuts form a market perspective sharing their enthusiasm about positive consumer trends for nut products. The conference proceedings concluded appropriately with presentations on the nutritional benefits of nuts as a whole food, the latest research regarding nuts and human health, and the process involved in achieving nut product labelling that promotes this positive health news.
As well as the wonderful variety in presentations, there was wide representation in the audience which consisted primarily of delegates from downstream nut industries including food manufacturers, packers, processors and traders. All delegates shared positive stories over their cup of tea bout the growing consumer demand for nuts and innovative nut products. This was supported by the presentations given by the snack food and baking product manufacturers. Not only was there enthusiasm about the strong demand for new as well as traditional nut products, but also about an increasing demand for gluten-free products made from nut meal.
The popularity of raw nuts and the gourmet nut products mentioned in presentations at the conference was complimented by very positive data confirming a rapid rise in both nut production and consumer demand for tree nuts. For Australia, this is perfect timing. Our domestic nut production is expected to more than double by 2012 and world demand for tree nuts is growing by about 4% a year, well above natural population growth. In addition, Australian consumption for tree nuts has increased by 50% in dollar terms and 30% by volume during the past five years. Not surprisingly, speakers presenting on nut marketing emphasised the importance of both exports and imports to the future of the Australian nut industry.
The positive buzz emanating from the Conference was music to the ears of the numerous delegates from the marketing and manufacturing sectors, and also the many nut growers in attendance.
